Custom Development and Engineering

MicroConnex performs custom research and development projects in the areas of medical devices, microelectronics, and MEMS scale sensors and actuators. Our expertise includes development of custom laser algorithms to micromachine two and three dimensional structures in delicate materials, which can then receive thin film coatings, e.g. for biocompatibility or as a precursor to further processing. Prototype devices may also be interfaced with custom flexible circuits or laminated into multi-layer polymer structures using LCP or kapton substrates.

Customers range from major medical device, electronic, automotive and aerospace companies to university-based research groups, but also include smaller start-up companies seeking to quickly explore new concepts. We often consult with customers early in the design phase, to help sort through design and materials tradeoffs in seeking the best approach to achieve functional requirements.

Research programs are typically carried out in close consultation with the customer, often working together in house to understand the most effective use of our micromachining, thin film and interconnect capabilities to develop new devices. Our goal is to provide quick and cost-effective solutions to multi-disciplinary development problems. Recent projects include:

Surgical and catheter-based ultrasonic imaging arrays
Therapeutic annular arrays
Microfluidics drug delivery systems
Single crystal sensors and actuators
Blood gas sensors
MEMS scale thermocouple arrays
Liquid crystal polymer (LCP) implantable electrodes
Laminated LCP structures for micro fuel cells
